A 23-year-old Omaha man was sentenced Monday to 8½ years in federal prison for robbing the Florence Post Office in April, the Office of U.S. Attorney Deborah Gilg said.
Donnell D. Smith was one of two men charged in the April 20 robbery. The other man, Jared C. Mason, also 23 and of Omaha, has been scheduled for sentencing Dec. 7.
One of the two carried a rifle as they demanded money from a postal employee, Gilg’s office said. Authorities say they left with $357.
Police later tracked the men to a house on Northridge Drive. They surrendered 45 minutes after police arrived.
Smith, who admitted his part in the robbery, told police he flushed his share of the money down the toilet. He showed officers where he hid the gun.
