    Opening-drive woes

Filed by Rich Kaipust at 7:44 p.m.

Nebraska took the opening kickoff Saturday and marched to a 7-0 lead over Kansas. Going 58 yards in six plays – after Tim Marlowe returned the kickoff 40 yards – really wasn't anything special.

Unless you look at the Huskers' first-possession success rate this season.

Nebraska had netted a touchdown on its first offensive series just once before (against Arkansas State). Only two other times did the Huskers produce points (field goals against Baylor and Louisiana-Lafayette).

And before Saturday, the Huskers had failed to get a first down on five of their nine opening possessions.
    Here's a game-by-game look at NU's first offensive series:

Florida Atlantic: Three plays, 3 yards, one penalty, punt

Arkansas State: Eight plays, 80 yards, TD

Virginia Tech: Three plays, 1 yard, punt

    Louisiana-Lafayette: 11 plays, 71 yards, FG

Missouri: Four plays, 10 yards, punt

Texas Tech: Three plays, minus-1 yard, punt

Iowa State: One play, 3 yards, fumble

Baylor: 11 plays, 44 yards, FG

Oklahoma: Three plays, 5 yards, one penalty, punt

Kansas: Six plays, 58 yards, TD
