Husker assistant wary of KU offense despite woes

Filed by Jon Nyatawa at 6:57 p.m.

Forget the Jayhawks' recent struggles on offense. NU defensive coordinator Carl Pelini said they have too many weapons for him to feel comfortable heading into Saturday's game.

Kansas has lost four straight, scoring just 44 points in its last three games. Senior quarterback Todd Reesing has been at the center of the struggles too, turning the ball over 10 times during the losing streak.

But Pelini's not blinded by what Kansas has done of late. He said after practice today that the Jayhawks have plenty of talent.

“They're an offense that can breakout again in any moment,” Pelini said. “You just don't want it to be against you.”

Here's a list of capable playmakers for KU that Pelini mentioned today: Reesing, senior running back Jake Sharp, senior receiver Kerry Meier and junior receiver Dezmon Briscoe. All four of those players were responsible for touchdowns in Nebraska's 45-35 win last season.

“They've got a lot of guys on the field who can make plays so you've got to be really sound and really disciplined,” Pelini said. “They'll take advantage if you make mistakes.”

Some other Husker football news today:

-- Junior cornerback Anthony West has worn a Blackshirt in practice this week after twice subbing in for injured teammate Alfonzo Dennard during the past two games. “He earned it,” Pelini said.

-- Tight end Chase Harper became the 16th known member of Nebraska's recruiting class when he made an oral commitment to the NU program Tuesday, according to rivals.com. Harper, a 6-foot-4, 235-pounder, redshirted before playing his freshman season at Navarro Junior College this fall.

-- Senior Ndamukong Suh is among eight semifinalists for the Lott Trophy, awarded to the nation's top defensive player for his impact on and off the field.
