Dr. Dmitry Oleynikov will take center stage tonight at the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s latest Science Cafe lecture, “Your Doctor Is a Robot.”

Oleynikov. an associate professor of surgery and director of the Center for Advanced Surgical Technology, said the talk would focus on his area of research and interest, robotic surgery.

“I thought it would be a fun topic for people to learn about,” he said.

Oleynikov said he uses many different kinds of robots and does research in robotics.

“People ‘get’ robots,” he said. “It’s kind of a fun idea, and I’m going to show them what’s possible and what’s not possible.”

Oleynikov said he enjoys outreach work such as the Science Cafes. He’s given talks to civic groups such as the Rotary Club, and even one entitled “What Every Police Officer Needs to Know About Indigestion.”

“It’s fun,” he said. “You’re talking on a much different level, and they enjoy it. I get to be the Sanjay Gupta of Omaha.”

The event will be held at the Slowdown, 729 N. 14th St., from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Science Cafe is a free educational event sponsored by UNMC and other groups to increase the population’s science literacy.
