Two Alaska residents died early Sunday in a three-vehicle accident about six miles east of the Grand Island interchange on Interstate 80.
A spokesman for the Nebraska State Patrol said Jane Mattson, 63, and William Mattson, 66, of Kenai, Alaska, were pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
According to a Nebraska State Patrol report, all three vehicles involved in the accident were westbound on I-80 just after midnight when a deer attempted to cross the roadway. The deer was struck by a Honda Accord driven by Kent Kincanon, 51, of Grand Island.
The air bags in the Honda deployed and the car lost control. Jane Mattson was driving a 2008 Volvo with William Mattson as the lone passenger when their car struck the Accord from behind.
A 2000 Freightliner driven by Debbie Sollenberger, 51, of Beulah, N.D. then collided with the Volvo
Everyone involved was wearing a seatbelt. The accident is under investigation.
