John Cusack and Lily Morgan in “2012,” opening Friday.
You might dance a jig, but you can’t do this
You’ll be step-kicking yourself if you miss “Riverdance” at the Orpheum Theater this week. That’s because the hit Irish music and dance show is in the middle of its farewell North American tour. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and at 8 p.m. Friday.
A honey of a night with Hall and Alpert
Now this is a sweet show. Omaha Performing Arts is opening its popular music series with a “Taste of Honey.” Vocalist Lani Hall and trumpet legend Herb Alpert will perform music from their latest album, featuring tunes from the Great American Songbook. The concert is Thursday at the Holland Performing Arts Center.
Bemis art auction going ... going ... gone!
Put a little creativity under the tree. The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts will hold its 11th Annual Art Auction on Saturday. More than 220 local, national and international artists have their works on display in a space spanning more than 10,000 square feet, so you’re sure to find the perfect gift. And proceeds benefit the center’s artist-in-residence program.
Horror spoof, ‘Odd Couple’ open in Bluffs
For those who prefer their drama live on stage, it’s all happening in the Bluffs this week. “Evil Dead: The Musical,” based on the cult movie of the same title, makes fun of 1980s horror flicks at Iowa Western Community College, while the female version of Neil Simon’s “The Odd Couple” is at the Chanticleer Theater. Both open Friday.
Bon Jovi, Amos and AC/DC music to drop
A couple of musicians are trying to renew their popularity. On Tuesday, Bon Jovi releases “The Circle,” and Tori Amos puts out “Midwinter Graces.” And while AC/DC isn’t releasing new music, it is dropping “Backtracks,” featuring 27 tracks and a DVD of its classic tunes.
Animated geezer and boy sure to lift spirits
Need a pick-me “Up”? Well, you can find it at the video store. The animated “Up” received tons of positive reviews on its way to earning $292 million at the box office. It stands a chance to become the second animated movie to score a best-picture Academy Award nomination. It comes out on DVD Tuesday.
Cusack, Hoffman coming to box office
Is the world coming to an end? John Cusack thinks it is in “2012,” and those previews of crumbling cultural icons seem to agree. Also opening at the multiplex Friday: Philip Seymour Hoffman cruises back to the rebellious 1960s for “Pirate Radio.” “Fantastic Mr. Fox” is based on the classic children’s tale by Roald Dahl and features the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray and Owen Wilson, among others.
