Blackshirts responded right to OU's quick-change offense

Filed by Nick Rubek at 3:02 p.m

Were those Nebraska blitzers or Blackshirts dropping into coverage?

Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones may still be struggling to understand. The Sooner freshman appeared confused much of Saturday night by an ever-changing Nebraska defense. Jones threw five interceptions, part of a 26-for-58 peformance in the Huskers' 10-3 win.

“We've been working pretty hard since camp on that glance game, changing in and out of calls,” NU defensive coordinator Carl Pelini said of the Oklahoma offensive system.

The Sooners regularly looked to the sideline for a play call based on the defensive look. Nebraska was ready to respond.

“I think we caused some indecision with that on Oklahoma's part," Pelini said. "They were checking to a couple blitz checks, and we would go back to coverage. We were checking coverage, we were showing coverage, and then we'd check to blitz.”

Pelini said NU played from its base alignment about 90 percent of the game.

“Our guys just played hard. They executed. They battled,” he said. “And they went to make plays, that's the best thing. I saw our secondary attacking the football instead of playing it safe. It's great to see. That's the hurdle we've been trying to cross, and we crossed it tonight."
