Tom Turkey to make appearance for kids

Parents can bring little ones to Hitchcock Nature Center's Talking Turkey program at 1 p.m. Sunday to meet Tom Turkey and examine turkey feathers, tracks, eggs and calls.

This program, for children ages 3 to 6 years and their parents, is full of hands-on learning, a story, craft and outdoor exploration.

The fee is $4 per child, and children must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the Loess Hills Lodge at the Honey Creek, Iowa, nature center.

Brain rehab patients featured in film

Four former patients at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln are profiled in the documentary “Pathways: From Brain Injury to Hope.”

The film follows the rehabilitation journeys of Alexis, Derek, Mandy and Christian. The documentary was made by Tiffany and Brandon Verzal, parents of Alexis, 2½, who was allegedly injured in 2007 at a day care center.

The hospital, 5401 South St. will offer free two showings of “Pathways” before it is submitted to national film festivals. The first showing will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. The second from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 14.

UNO professor's talk to focus on Holocaust

“The Holocaust: A Family History Documentary” will be the subject of Saturday's 2 p.m. talk in the downstairs meeting room at W. Dale Clark Library, 215 S. 15th St.

Oliver B. Pollak, a history professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, will be the speaker at the free event.

Goodwill offers training for dropouts

Goodwill Industries provides a training program for high school dropouts ages 16 through 24 through YouthBuild Omaha.

Locally, it is a 10-month program during which participants spend time in the classroom earning their high school equivalency diploma while working with Habitat for Humanity to learn construction skills.

Goodwill is accepting applications for YouthBuild Omaha. The program operates from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays at Goodwill Industries, 1111 S. 41st St.

Participants earn a living allowance while enrolled. Graduates of YouthBuild Omaha also receive a scholarship to continue education, plus placement and follow-up services.

Offices to get advice on coping with H1N1

What to do in your office to prevent H1N1 flu and how to work short-staffed due to illness will be addressed at Tuesday's meeting of the Norfolk (Neb.) Area Chamber of Commerce meeting.

Kathy Nordby with the Elkhorn Logan Valley Public Health Department will be the speaker at the noon luncheon at Valentino's restaurant in Norfolk.

Quilting expert to show her wares

Quilting specialist Alex Anderson will talk and show some of her quilts on Sunday.

The host of quilting shows on cable TV and the Internet will be at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center in La Vista from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Her appearance is sponsored by Bernina Sewing Centers. Tickets, $18.50 apiece, are available at the two Omaha stores, 3407 S. 84th St. and 10144 Maple St.
