Woman slashed in theft attempt

A woman's arm was slashed when a would-be purse thief tried to cut the strap of her purse.

According to police, the woman was walking with a friend near 16th and Howard Streets about 10:45 Sunday night when a man came up behind her and tried to steal her purse by cutting the strap, which was over the woman's shoulder. In the process, the man cut the woman's arm.

When he wasn't able to get the purse, the man took off on foot.

The woman's friend drove her to the Nebraska Medical Center with an injury that was not considered life-threatening.
