Suh cited in early-morning car crash

LINCOLN — Police cited Nebraska senior Ndamukong Suh on suspicion of negligent driving early Sunday morning after his SUV struck three other vehicles parked on a city side street.

Suh, driving a 2003 Land Rover Discovery, told police that he swerved to avoid an animal around 2:20 a.m. on U Street between 30th and 31st Streets in Lincoln. His SUV struck three cars before coming to a stop.

Capt. David Beggs said Suh, 22, submitted to a preliminary breath test, and his blood-alcohol level was found to be under Nebraska's legal limit of 0.08.

Suh, an All-America candidate at defensive tackle for the Huskers, recorded five tackles and helped Nebraska's football team to a 20-10 win against Baylor Saturday afternoon.

According to an NU spokesman, coach Bo Pelini said he's aware of the accident and he has spoken with Suh about it.

    Henery enters the fray

Nebraska kicker and punter Alex Henery did something new Saturday. The junior logged his first tackle of the season.

A late Husker punt included a pair of laterals on the Baylor return, the second of which left Chance Casey running free. Henery roamed the middle of the field, picked his spot and took down Casey near the Bear sideline after a 62-yard return with 28 seconds left.

“There was like three of them, so I knew if I went right at them I'd kind of get rocked,'' Henery said.

“So I kind of just stayed with it and came from the side, I guess.''

    Textbook form?

“I don't know,'' Henery said. “I just made sure I brought him down.''

Henery made field goals of 45 and 22 yards in the 20-10 win to improve to 11 of 13 on the season and 37 of 42 for his career.

    Digging deep for rushers

Because of injuries at I-back, Nebraska found itself playing little-used Austin Jones and Lester Ward late in the third quarter and into the fourth on Saturday.

Ward had carried just once all season before rushing seven times for 16 yards on the Huskers' last two possessions.

“It's what we got,'' NU offensive coordinator Shawn Watson said. “We've got to keep working through it.''

Watson said Roy Helu took a shot to his injured right shoulder and Dontrayevous Robinson got “dinged up.'' Robinson carried 13 times for 61 yards and Helu seven for 24. Marcus Mendoza also was used.

    ABC to televise OU game

The Big 12 announced Sunday that the Oklahoma-Nebraska game will be televised by ABC with a 7 p.m. kickoff Saturday. It will be the 15th consecutive OU-NU game to be televised either nationally or regionally.

Also on Saturday, ABC has Oklahoma State-Iowa State at 2:30 p.m., Fox Sports Net has Central Florida-Texas at 11 a.m. and Versus will carry Kansas-Kansas State at 11:30 a.m.

    National honor for Crick

Nebraska sophomore Jared Crick on Sunday was named the national defensive player of the week by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

The defensive tackle from Cozad, Neb., made 13 tackles and tied a school record with five sacks in the 20-10 win at Baylor. Crick also added a fumble recovery and a pass breakup.

According to NU sports information, the five sacks are the most by any defensive player this season in Bowl Championship Subdivision play.

Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli was the national offensive player of the week.

    Work needed from wideouts

The two top NU receivers demoted in practice last week and sidelined Saturday against Baylor simply have to keep working hard, according to assistant coach Ted Gilmore.

Both sophomore Curenski Gilleylen and senior Menelik Holt spent portions of practice with the scout team as Nebraska prepared for the Bears. Neither played Saturday, Gilmore said.

So what do they have to do to win their jobs back?

“Come back to work and do it every single day — every single snap in practice,” said Gilmore, the NU receivers coach. “We need them. We need them all. I'm confident they'll continue to work hard, just like they did this past week.”

Gilleylen has caught 16 passes this season. Holt has 15. Only one Husker wide receiver, junior Niles Paul, has more catches. He has 25.
