Metropolitan Utilities District will survey 400 customers by telephone in November to gauge what they know about natural gas safety.
MUD includes pamphlets with utility bills, runs newspaper ads and uses other media to educate customers about safety issues, including how to detect gas leaks and what to do if they suspect a leak.
The federal government requires such communication with the public, and every two years utility companies must conduct surveys to determine how effective the education efforts have been.
MUD received high marks after the last survey, spokeswoman Mari Matulka said.
The utility serves more than 200,000 natural gas customers in Omaha, Bellevue, Bennington, Fort Calhoun, Yutan and Springfield.
