Filth, neglect bring prison term

MADISON, Neb. (AP) -- A 36-year-old man from Pierce faces up to six years in prison when he's sentenced for child abuse and animal neglect.

After a deal with prosecutors, Chris Walter pleaded guilty to one felony count of child abuse and one misdemeanor count of cruel neglect of an animal.

The charges stemmed from conditions the animals and children shared at a Norfolk home that Walter lived in with Michelle Ziemer. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 1.

While searching the home, officers found a 5-year-old wearing only pants and a 3-year-old wearing only underwear. Both were very dirty.

Among the sick or injured animals were 21 dogs and three cats.

Officers say none of the people or animals had a clean place to eat or sleep.
