LUBBOCK, Texas — On to Austin, where things are guaranteed to get a lot tougher.
The No. 8 Nebraska volleyball team tuned up for its anticipated rematch against second-ranked Texas with a 25-12, 25-20, 25-20 sweep Wednesday night against Texas Tech. Now the Huskers can focus all of their attention on Friday's road match against the Longhorns.
And coach John Cook's team will have plenty of time to gear up for unbeaten Texas. Nebraska was set to fly out of Lubbock immediately after its win over Tech and arrive in Austin before midnight. The Huskers will spend today and Friday in Texas' capitol.
Against the Big 12, Texas Tech has won only one set all season. As expected, Nebraska ultimately had little problem handing the Red Raiders their 50th consecutive league loss.
Despite the relatively easy win, this was not a performance that made Cook confident heading into Friday night. After dominating set one, Nebraska committed a combined 12 attack errors in games two and three and totaled eight serving miscues in the match.
“We played great in game one, then we go right back to being error-prone,” Cook said. “Good teams, it doesn't matter who they're playing, they're going to play at a certain level. Texas Tech did things to create problems, and that's one thing. But when you give them so many points on errors, that's what's so disappointing.”
Hannah Werth finished with 15 kills and 12 digs for NU, while Tara Mueller hit .360 and had 11 kills and 10 digs. Setter Sydney Anderson added 10 digs and helped the Huskers outhit Tech .308-.093. Libero Kayla Banwarth had 11 digs and served up two of Nebraska's six aces.
But the Huskers also had little success stopping Tech's Amanda Dowdy, who turned in 14 kills on .462 attacking.
“We came out strong, then we let up — and that's something that we can control,” Mueller said. “I'm definitely a little frustrated, too, just because I know we're a better team than what we showed tonight.”
In September at the NU Coliseum, the Longhorns beat the Huskers 3-1. That victory marked Texas' first win in Lincoln since 1988. In Austin, Texas has won three of four over NU, including two straight.
On Wednesday night, Texas improved to 17-0 overall and 12-0 in the Big 12 by rolling to a 25-18, 25-14, 25-20 victory at No. 25 Texas A&M.
“I'm just trying to patiently wait for our team to play consistent volleyball,” Cook said. “We need to stop shooting ourselves in the foot, and we still need to prove we can play great consistently as a team.”
