What We Are Wearing: Michael Jackson costumes

By Kevin Coffey
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

WHAT ARE THEY?

Although the King of Pop has passed, that's not stopping folks from finding ways to dress up in his likeness for this haunted holiday.

Jackson costumes come in officially licensed packages with full outfits from his videos. Other less-expensive generic versions (labeled “King of Pop” and other nonspecific names) are also available. The costumes can be found — as long as they haven't sold out — at many local stores.

HOW POPULAR IS IT?

Area stores have been selling out of some Jackson costumes.

David M. Mangelsen's, 3457 S. 84th St., had three styles: “Billie Jean,” “Beat It” and “Thriller.” The “Thriller” costume was so popular that it sold out quickly.

“It's been a big thing. We've had to do a couple orders to keep the sequined gloves in. We've been selling out of his wigs left and right,” said Jeremy Lubash, a manager in the Mangelsen's prop room. “We can't keep them on the shelf.”

Nobbies, 4008 Twin Creek Drive in Bellevue, sold out of the red, “Beat It”-type jackets, but has plenty of other M.J. costumes in stock, said Cindy Wilson, the store's assistant manager. Nobbies also has a store at 2500 S. 120th St.

WHERE CAN I FIND IT?

Just about anywhere that sells Halloween costumes. Both physical stores and online locations have a lot of Michael gear to choose from.

Nobbies sells jackets from $40 to $45. Gloves run $3.99, and wig and sunglasses sets are $15.

Mangelsen's sells the officially licensed Michael Jackson costumes (which include jackets, pants and accessories) for $100 to $125. White sequined gloves are $14.99 each, and the store also offers three styles of Jackson wigs and other accessories.

Chain stores such as Target and Toys R Us also sell the costumes, and online stores such as Amazon.com and CostumeSuperCenter.com offer wide arrays of costumes in all price ranges.

WHAT ELSE IS IN?

Scooby-Doo costumes have also been a hit. Over at Mangelsen's, Lubash said there has been a run on toddler-, child- and adult-sized Scooby costumes as well as many requests for the other characters: Velma, Fred, Shaggy and Daphne.
