Zac Lee, the starting QB through six games, has seemingly lost the support of the Husker fan base. But Bo Pelini doesn't want Lee trying too hard to get it back.
Pelini has already announced that the team's top quarterback job is up for grabs. That means Lee will spend the week battling with true freshman Cody Green in practice.
But Pelini said during his weekly press conference today that Lee's putting extra pressure on himself to perform, and the results haven't been favorable.
“He feels like the whole state of Nebraska's against him,” Pelini said. “That would affect anybody.”
Lee, who looked hesitant and indecisive at times against Texas Tech, was twice pulled from the loss. He completed 16 of his 22 pass attempts, but tallied just 128 yards.
The Memorial Stadium crowd was noticeably frustrated with Lee's performance Saturday, booing after offensive possessions ended and at times even chanting for Green.
But whether it's deserved or not, that's the nature of the quarterback position, Pelini said. Lee just has to deal with the criticism.
“He's got to learn how to handle that, handle the quote-unquote negativity, some of those things, and just go out and play,” Pelini said. “You can't get caught up in all the things. You've just got to execute. Eliminate all the distractions and execute.”
