New OPPD plant could win award

NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. (AP) — Omaha Public Power District’s newest coal power plant is a finalist for an award from the trade magazine Power Engineering.

The 600-megawatt Nebraska City Station Unit 2 went into service in southeastern Nebraska on May 1.

The magazine and PennWell Corp. named OPPD’s project one of three finalists for the best coal-fired project of 2009 award. The other finalists are in Kentucky and Illinois.

The winners will be announced at a banquet in Las Vegas on Dec. 7.

OPPD serves more than 310,000 customers in 13 southeast Nebraska counties.
