Let's talk Blackshirts and the impending QB controversy

Filed by Mitch Sherman at 9:45 p.m.

Nebraska did, in fact, distribute the Blackshirts to 13 defensive players Friday before the team's walkthrough practice. But coach Bo Pelini was in no mood to discuss today after Texas Tech drilled NU 31-10 at Memorial Stadium.

“Don't worry about the Blackshirts,” Pelini said. “Get over it. We didn't play well enough. It had nothing to do with black shirts or yellow shirts or white shirt or whatever the hell it is. We got our butts kicked. It's not about Blackshirts. It's about executing on game day, when we're out there in red and white. And we didn't do that.”

    Others were more open.

"I thought we deserved them," defensive end Pierre Allen said. "The coaches thought we deserved them."

Ndamukong Suh said he's not so sure now.

"If I was Coach Bo, I'd definitely take them away," Suh said. "We didn't play up to the Blackshirt level."

We've got lots of coverage in Sunday's World-Herald on the disappointing afternoon for Nebraska.

Lots of juicy stuff, no doubt, to come this week as NU attempts to turn its attention toward Iowa State.

Among the items to watch, Nebraska coaches said nothing to downplay the impending quarterback controversy after true freshman Cody Green replaced Zac Lee in the second half.

On the injury front, Roy Helu appears OK after suffering a stinger that prevented him from playing in the fourth quarter. Cornerback Alfonzo Dennard also failed to finish the game because of a shoulder injury.
