COLUMBIA, Mo. — Nebraska missed out on its chance for a fourth straight sweep.
But the seventh-ranked Huskers ultimately had little problem putting together their fifth straight victory. In the process, Nebraska became the first volleyball team this season to win a match on Missouri’s home court.
The Huskers continued their strong October run Saturday night, beating the Tigers 25-17, 25-15, 21-25, 25-13 at the Hearnes Center. Mizzou entered the night with an 8-0 home mark.
The Huskers (14-4, 7-2 Big 12) moved into a second-place tie with No. 13 Iowa State in the conference standings. Nebraska’s next match will be Wednesday night at home against the Cyclones.
“The three games we won tonight, I thought that was about as good as we’ve played all year,” NU coach John Cook said. “We were sharp, we did some great things, we made adjustments — so I was very pleased.
“The one game we lost, we just relaxed a little bit. That’s inexperience and us going on cruise control. Missouri came back, and hopefully that will help our players understand there’s no easy points in the Big 12.”
Junior setter Sydney Anderson matched a career high with 57 assists and helped Nebraska hit better than .300 for a third straight match.
Outside hitter Hannah Werth had 15 digs and again led the Huskers in kills. The freshman tied her career best with 17 putaways. Lindsey Licht added 13 kills on .367 hitting, Tara Mueller recorded 10 kills and 11 digs, and libero Kayla Banwarth continued to shine defensively with a match-high 25 digs.
The contest drew a season-best 2,646 to the Hearnes Center as part of Mizzou’s “Can the Huskers” promotion. But the turnout wasn’t enough to spark the Tigers, who haven’t won a home match against Nebraska since 1982.
Mizzou played the match without standout junior Julianna Klein. An outside hitter from Keota, Iowa, Klein was held out because of an illness.
In Klein’s absence, Paola Ampudia became the Tigers’ main offensive option, and she finished with 23 kills on 61 attacks — both career highs for the junior. But no other Missouri player had more than eight kills.
In the sets Nebraska won, the Huskers hit .375, .371 and .414. In the set Nebraska lost, Mizzou had a .256-.156 attack advantage to go with nine kills from Ampudia. The 2007 NJCAA national player of the year for Miami Dade Community College, Ampudia was named this season’s Big 12 preseason newcomer of the year.
“We knew they were going to set (Ampudia) a ton of balls tonight,” Cook said. “We slowed her down, but we’ve got to do a lot better job on her next time we play them in Lincoln. She’s good out of the back row, and they do nice job getting her the ball.”
