DENISON, Iowa — While the work to reconstruct Valley Drive in Denison, Iowa, nears completion, the City Council voted this week to add another intake drain on the street to handle storm runoff.
Resident Ken Meyer called City Engineer Terry Crawford during a heavy rainfall recently. Meyer lives on the east side of Valley Drive at the bottom of the hill.
Crawford said that during the heavy rain, up to half the runoff was bypassing the storm sewer drain. By the time the water got to the bottom of the hill, it was deep enough to jump the 2½-inch lip on Meyer’s driveway.
The City Council authorized spending up to $10,000 to install an additional drain and for additional storm sewer work on Valley Drive.
As proposed by Crawford, the additional storm sewer drain and storm sewer work would involve boring under two driveways a distance of about 120 feet.
Crawford told the council that the storm sewer intake had been in the original design but was taken out as it was assumed all the storm water would be captured with the system as constructed.
The city would have had to pay the other costs of the additional storm sewer drain if it had been part of the bid.
