    Top-ranked Patriots stay perfect

In what has been a topsy-turvy season of Metro Conference football, Millard South remains the only constant.

The top-ranked Patriots kept rolling Friday night with a 42-28 home win over third-ranked Omaha Creighton Prep. Millard South, the only unbeaten team left in Class A, moved its record to 6-0 in front of a chilly crowd estimated at 1,800.

“We knew going in that this was going to be a great game,” Patriots coach Andy Means said. “We had to fight for 48 minutes.”

Those expecting a low-scoring battle in the damp, cool weather were sorely mistaken. Millard South led 21-20 at halftime before Prep rallied to tie the game 28-28 with 28 seconds left in the third quarter.

But the Patriots owned the fourth quarter, scoring a pair of touchdowns to put it away. And Millard South's two best players on the field Friday night — senior quarterback Bronson Marsh and junior running back Tre Sacks — played major roles in those final two scores.

After the Junior Jays tied the game, Marsh moved his team 61 yards in six plays to put the Patriots back on top with 10:07 left. He capped the drive with a 17-yard scoring pass to senior wide receiver Joey Felici.

“Even after they tied it, we still had a lot of confidence in our offense,” Marsh said. “And trying to stay unbeaten is what we want this season.”

The elusive Marsh ran for two short touchdowns and connected with Felici — son of former Nebraska defensive end Tony Felici — for two more TDs. Marsh rushed 18 times for 117 yards and completed 11 of 22 passes for 148.

Prep's next drive stalled at midfield and the Junior Jays were forced to punt. Millard South took over at its own 19 and quickly went to work again, picking up yardage in big chunks.

Seven rushing plays netted 75 yards before the 5-foot-5 Sacks scooted into the end zone from the 7. He led the Patriots in rushing with 149 yards and two touchdowns.

“He's tough to bring down,” Means said. “He plays like that in practice and he had a nice game tonight.”

Sacks said he didn't know what kind of game to expect against the Junior Jays, who fell to 4-2.

“We knew they were a good team,” he said, “so I guess I wasn't surprised by how high scoring it was. But we knew our defense needed to step it up after that first half.”

The Patriots rolled up 332 yards rushing and 148 passing to finish with 480 yards in total offense. Prep rushed for 261 yards — 172 gained by workhorse Nick Mizaur — and passed for 64.

Mizaur scored on runs of 13 and 50 yards to help Prep take a 13-7 lead after one quarter. But a pair of Marsh 1-yard scoring runs sandwiched around a TD run by Junior Jays fullback Cody Hobbs allowed Millard South to take a one-point halftime lead.

A 9-yard touchdown catch by Felici put the Patriots ahead by eight midway through the third quarter, but Prep quarterback Adam Svoboda crashed over from the 1 with 28 seconds left in the period to make it 28-26. Prep then tied it on a two-point conversion pass from Kelvin Brandt to Mizaur.

It was all Patriots after that.
