How does it work: It checks information against Social Security and federal immigration databases.
Who operates it: The Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration.
For employers: The system is free, but employers must register. Results are returned in seconds.
For employees: The system uses a person’s name, Social Security number, date of birth, citizenship status and any other immigration information. The person has eight federal business days to file a challenge if the results are wrong.
