Roving rubek on the sidelines— eight recruits crazy about game day

Memorial Stadium, Lincoln — Color Bud Sasser impressed.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound receiver prospect out of Denton, Texas, looked to be enjoying every part of his official visit to Lincoln on Saturday.

Sasser, one of eight official visitors for NU's 300th straight sellout, shook his head and smiled during the Tunnel Walk. He turned to his left to fellow visitor Ciante Evans, an NU commit, who could offer up only a “dang” and a grin.

Sasser even gave out of a few high fives as he came out of the tunnel with the group of recruits.

All eight of the expected official visitors were in Lincoln on Saturday for kickoff. Included in that group was Evans, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound defensive back out of Arlington, Texas. A three-star recruit according to Rivals.com, Evans was making his first game-day visit to Nebraska.

Also there were highly regarded receiver prospects Willis Wright and Joshua Reese, both of Florida. Wright, a three-star prospect, has offers from Miami, Auburn, Ole Miss, Purdue and Rutgers, to name a few. Reese, making his first official visit, is a four-star recruit. His offer list includes Florida, Florida State, Miami, Oregon and Tennessee. Both wore Nebraska jackets and hats and stuck together for much of their time during the game.

Oklahoma State defensive end commit Chase Rome was in attendance, as were wide receiver Bobby Swigert, offensive lineman Colin Tanigawa and tight end Chase Harper.

Rome is a four-star prospect who also visited NU's junior day over the summer. He was snapping plenty of pictures as he stood on the sideline with his dad.

Harper signed with Iowa State out of high school but failed to qualify academically before going to a Texas junior college. Swigert, a 6-foot-1, 175-pounder, has a list of offers from the likes of Boston College, Michigan, Pittsburgh and Stanford. Tanigawa is a 6-foot-3, 286-pound lineman out of California.

Just before kickoff, as NU players rushed onto the field and the group took in the atmosphere, NU linebackers coach Mike Ekeler slammed into Harper, Wright and Reese and told the trio “don't be scared.”

Also on hand were Nebraska high school prospects Antaries Daniels (Omaha Northwest), Jeff Uher (Omaha Creighton Prep), Chris Reed (Omaha Central) and Jake Cotton (Lincoln Southeast). Cotton is the son of Nebraska offensive line coach Barney Cotton.

Here's 1 way to be the hit of your section

It took Marvin Sanders a few minutes to find his target, but the Nebraska defensive backs coach made a youngster's day when he did.

Sanders picked out a young Husker fan from the crowd in the first few rows of the northeast corner of the stadium. Sanders lobbed a ball up to him, making him an instant hit in his section.

Young Cotton Gets A Peculiar Score

Ben Cotton probably didn't expect his first collegiate touchdown to happen the way it did.

The redshirt freshman tight end rolled over to find a ball lying in the end zone after I-back Roy Helu fumbled at the goal line. Cotton emerged from a pile with the ball and two hands in the air before officials ruled it a score.

Barney Cotton, Ben's dad, had a little smile and congratulations for his son when he reached the sideline.

Bits and Pieces From the Sidelines

Wisconsin Athletic Director Barry Alvarez's video board presentation in honor of the 300th sellout didn't come off as planned the first time around. He reappeared later, though, much to the pleasure of NU fans. . . . Offensive lineman Cruz Barrett was in uniform for the first time this season. . . . Fireworks accompanied the message that Saturday also broke NU's single-game attendance record. . . . NU volleyball players, fresh off a four-set loss against Texas, wore identical homemade shirts.
