As if Kevin Barrett hadn’t done enough.
The Boys Town quarterback already had thrown for three touchdowns, rushed for 72 yards on seven carries and engineered a 35-0 lead, all before halftime.
“I wanted a little more,” Barrett said.
Barrett took the opening kickoff of the second half 79 yards for a score, then finished his final drive under center with a 26-yard touchdown run, highlighting a 49-0 rout of Bennington by the Class C-1 No. 1 Cowboys on Friday night at the Corral.
The 6-foot, 215-pound Barrett finished with 100 rushing yards and 118 passing yards. Add in the kickoff return, and Barrett produced more than 300 all-purpose yards.
“He’s dynamic, that’s for sure,” Boys Town coach Kevin Kush said.
Boys Town started fast and had the running-clock rule in effect to start the second half. After recovering a fumble at the Bennington 18 on the game’s second play, Barrett found Jahrod Phillips on a screen play to the right for a 14-yard touchdown.
Barrett connected with Nehemiah Wilkins from 16 yards out, and backfield mate Kevin Humphrey rumbled for a 36-yard score on the Cowboys’ next two possessions to put Boys Town up 21-0 less than eight minutes in.
“We’ve started fast a few times this year,” Kush said. “One of our coaches was saying in the locker room that he wasn’t worried about this group coming out and playing hard out of the gate. That’s kind of nice luxury.”
Barrett hooked up with Tyrell Siler-Moore on a 20-yard touchdown strike on the fourth play of the second quarter before Tim Thompson went in from 6 yards on the Cowboys’ next possession to push the margin to 35.
When the dust settled on a lopsided first half, Boys Town had amassed 275 total yards. Bennington had 18.
“They’re fast and athletic,” Bennington coach Greg Bohn said. “You can’t give them short fields. That’s exactly what we did. A well-coached team like that is going to capitalize on those.”
The Badgers finished with 50 total yards. Running back Tom Keck had 11 carries for 46 yards. Boys Town’s Humphrey had 96 yards on seven carries. Teammate Phillips finished with 80 yards on three catches.
The Boys Town defense harassed Badger quarterback Trevor Bohn all night, sacking the junior eight times and forcing two interceptions. Through five games, Boys Town has given up just six points.
