BOULDER, Colo. — There would be no Rocky Mountain upset this year for the Nebraska volleyball team.
Colorado native Lindsey Licht put together her best match of the season, lifting the No. 8 Huskers to a convincing 25-15, 25-22, 25-13 sweep over the Buffaloes.
Nebraska had lost two of its last three matches in Boulder, with Colorado turning in a pair of stunning victories in both 2006 and 2008. But the Huskers dominated the first set, put together an impressive rally to go up 2-0 and polished off the victory with a third-set blowout.
“We had some bad demons from last year, so we had to get through that,” Nebraska coach John Cook said. “Once we won that second set, you could see how good we started playing.”
Licht, the 6-foot-5 right-side hitter from Aurora, Colo., pounded 16 kills — one off her career high. She put away seven kills on 10 swings in set one and hit a season-best .481 on the night to help Nebraska improve to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in the Big 12.
Tara Mueller added eight digs and 11 kills on .350 hitting for NU, and the Huskers held the Buffaloes to .042 hitting for the match.
Nebraska trailed by scores of 13-5 and 17-10 in set two. But Licht had three kills and a block to spark a 6-0 run that got the Huskers back into the set. Later, with the score tied 18-all, an impressive save by Kayla Banwarth helped NU win a long rally, and Nebraska went on to take its 2-0 lead.
In set three, Mueller had five kills while attacking at a .444 clip, and the Huskers limited the Buffaloes to just three kills and minus-.115 hitting.
Nebraska finished with a 53-36 edge in digs, including 12 apiece from Sydney Anderson and Hannah Werth and 11 more from Banwarth. Senior middle blocker Kori Cooper appeared in her first match in three weeks and had two kills on six swings while playing the first set.
The Huskers now must prepare for one of their toughest weeks on the Big 12 schedule. NU first plays another road match at Texas A&M on Wednesday. Then the Huskers host No. 2 Texas in a critical showdown on Saturday.
“We're going to continue seeing tougher teams, so we have to keep getting better,” Cook said. “We continue to do nice things in spurts, and that's a positive. But we have to learn to be more consistent and start playing better over the course of a whole match.”
