Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer was complimentary of Nebraska today in answering questions from the media as the Hokies go to work in preparation for the Huskers' visit Saturday to Blacksburg, Va.
“I thought they were good last year,” Beamer said of NU. “They're better this year.”
Nebraska wasn't good enough last year to beat Tech. Beamer's squad handed Bo Pelini his first loss as the NU coach, 35-30 at Memorial Stadium in the third game of the season.
Beamer, the Hokies' coach of 23 years, played it pretty conservatively, as usual, in his 20-minute session. He complimented the NU program, Pelini, Nebraska quarterback Zac Lee and the defensive line, notably tackle Ndamukong Suh.
Beamer downplayed the impact of Lane Stadium as a hostile venue, though you can bet he would much rather play in Blacksburg than anywhere else.
The coach also singled out the Nebraska offensive line, which didn't exactly blow away Arkansas State on Saturday. The Huskers rushed for 136 yards – 4.9 per attempt – and did a nice job of protecting Lee, who was sacked twice in the Huskers' 38-9 win.
“We haven't played an offensive line this good,” Beamer said. “They can do it.”
The Hokies beat Marshall 52-10 Saturday after a 34-24 loss to Alabama on Sept. 5.
No word yet from Tech on whether cornerback Stephan Virgil and tight end Greg Boone may return this week after missing the win over Marshall with injuries.
More from Beamer later. Pelini is up within the hour on the Big 12 teleconference.
And I'll be chatting live on the Big Red Page at noon.
