LINCOLN — For the third time in three days, Nebraska has added a player to its 2010 recruiting class.
Cornerback Ciante Evans, from Arlington, Texas, made an oral commitment to the Huskers Tuesday, capping a busy stretch for an NU program that seemingly lacked momentum on the recruiting front.
Nebraska's number of commitments had dwindled of late — after two players, receiver Keeston Terry and cornerback Anterio Sloan, reneged on their promises to play for the Huskers.
But since Sunday, Nebraska's received nonbinding pledges from safety Harvey Jackson of Missouri City, Texas; defensive end Walker Ashburn of River Ridge, La.; and now Evans, 5-foot-11, 170-pound cornerback at Juan Seguin High School. Evans' announcement makes him the eighth known member in the 2010 NU recruiting class.
Evans fills a cornerback spot left vacant by Sloan. And he'll bring some stability to the position once he arrives in Lincoln, according to his high school coach, Carlos Lynn.
Evans is an easy player to coach because he does what he's told, over and over again, Lynn said.
“He makes very few mental mistakes,” Lynn said. “He's the epitome of consistency. You know what you're going to get when you put him on the football field.”
Evans chose Nebraska over several schools — including Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Kansas — mainly because of the NU staff, according to Lynn. Evans noticed that the NU coaches made extra efforts to relate to their players.
“He talked about the interaction between the coaches and the players and how the coaches seemed to really, really get into the lives of the young men,” Lynn said.
From the beginning, Nebraska seemed to meet all of Evans' expectations, according to Lynn. Eventually, his senior cornerback made up his mind.
“He was being recruited by a lot of schools and basically, he was in the driver's seat,” Lynn said. “We tried to let him know that when he felt good about a situation, he needed to pull the trigger. Don't wait. ... And he felt good about the Cornhuskers, so he went ahead and pulled the trigger.”
