Football: Catching up with D.J. Jones

    Position: Offensive lineman

    Class: Junior

    Height, weight: 6-5, 315

    Hometown: Omaha

Notable: The Omaha Central graduate saw time at both guard and tackle during the spring and will be in the mix on a deep and experienced line.

    Q: How was the summer?

A: It went real good. Fast, but good.

Q: What was the best part of the offseason?

A: Getting stronger. Basically just feeling like you've accomplished something. You could see the improvement from the lifting and conditioning.

Q: Was there a drill you dreaded?

A: There's no getting used to our county fair drill. It's a drill where you've got to flip over huge tires and that kind of stuff. You don't really get used to those.

    Q: Sounds tough.

A: Yeah, but now you see the improvement. And you're like “My legs feel stronger from lifting those tires.”

Q: What's the biggest difference going into this camp compared to those in the past?

A: I think it's the fact that we're all more on the same page. I feel like the entire offensive line is on the same page. We all want to do well individually, but we also want to help our teammates to do well.

Q: After a year under coach Barney Cotton, where has the offensive line improved the most?

A: Togetherness. That continuity is there. He makes us feel like we're all acclimated and working together. We all work well under coach Cotton.

Q: This is an offense that had a pretty good season last year. Do you feel like the 2009 group can play at or above that level?

A: Our goal is always to get even better. So we feel like we can be, if not better, just as good. So that's where we set the bar to get to.
