Shatel: It doesn't get better than this

It's here.

My favorite month.

Our favorite time of year.

First day of practice.

Helmets, shorts and hope.

This is the year.

That Zac Lee, he's going to be a good one. I hear that the guy can launch it.

Ndamukong Suh has dropped some weight. What do you think, Outland Trophy?

First day of pads. Loveliest sound in the world.

What time is the Hall of Fame game on TV?

I don't have an exhibition season. If it's football, I watch.

There should be only two exhibition games, by the way.

So Nebraska's ranked 22nd? Sounds about right. Don't want the Huskers starting too high. Too many question marks.

Missouri and Kansas are mad. Don't know if that's good.

Keep your eye on this Mike McNeill. He's the kind of tight end Shawn Watson used so well at Colorado. Remember Daniel Graham in 2001?

Sorry. Didn't mean to bring it up.

Even without Shonn Greene, I really like Iowa. The Big Ten schedule doesn't do them any favors, though.

If Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads can make a spread offense work in Ames, Iowa, forget coach of the year. He should win a Nobel Peace Prize.

Either him or the guy who can get Texas and Oklahoma to shake hands this year.

You know, if Nebraska can split Virginia Tech and Missouri games on the road, they've got a shot at a BCS bowl.

That's the same Virginia Tech that is a national title sleeper, by the way.

Don't be surprised if NU starts 3-2, though.

Hey, it's August. And 5-0 is definitely possible.

Friday Night Lights. When do they turn them on?

There is nothing — nothing — better than seeing high school stadium lights on.

Unless it's wearing your jersey to school on Friday. (They still do that, right?)

Or taking your kids to a high school game. You watch the game. They run around the hill.

Can anyone beat Millard West?

Can anyone beat Andrew Rodriguez and Aurora?

High school Fridays, college Saturdays, pro Sundays.

Health club Mondays.

That first autumn chill.

Driving home from the game and listening to the high school scoreboard show.

Driving home from the game and listening to the college football scoreboard show.

Prepping in a downtown Lincoln establishment while watching Chris, Lee and Kirk. At 9 a.m.

You know, I don't think that anyone realizes how good this offensive line is going to be.

Sean Fisher and Will Compton are going to be stars. Maybe this year.

The Blackshirts will be as good as Jared Crick and Baker Steinkuhler. They have to take the double-team pressure off of Suh.

Did I mention that I love Caniglia Field?

Wonder what Trev Alberts wants from UNO football?

Can Matt Cassel save the Chiefs?

Can Jay Cutler save the Bears?

Can anyone save the Broncos?

I just hope that they show Tom Brady's wife on TV.

This is the year Oklahoma State beats Texas, isn't it?

Kansas will be tough to beat in Lawrence, but Nebraska's lines outplayed KU's last year, and there's no reason for that to change.

Why isn't anyone worried about Colorado?

Red balloons.

The sound of the drums as the marching band approaches the stadium is absolute heaven.

Yeah, I said it: Husker burgers.

Got to get my cholesterol down by Sept. 5.

Is Howard Schnellenberger still coaching?

You think that he and Tom Osborne will talk before the game?

Will Roy Helu Jr. hurdle defenders again this year?

Now all I need is a two-deep.

It's August.

Life is good.
