The University of Nebraska plans to beef up its on-line college course offerings -- and to charge more to take those courses.
NU officials today announced resident tuition increases ranging from 10 to 20 percent for online courses.
The NU Board of Regents recently repealed a long-standing reglation preventing distance courses from costing more than on-campus offerings.
NU officials said the rule had been a barrier to expanding on-line course offerings because it costs more to develop and deliver an on line course.
Arnold Bateman, who directs NU's distance education program, said the goal is to make NU's distance program competitve with national leaders in the filed, such as public universities like Penn State and the University of Massachusetts and for-profit providers like Phoenix University.
A new on-line bachelor's degree in business soon will be added to the 1,200 online courses and 70 online degree programs offered by NU's four campuses. Students registering for fall 2010 distance courses should be able to go to a single web site that would allow to register for a distance education class offered by any campus.
