The Lincoln Children's Zoo baby shower will feature, among other animals, twin Matschie's tree kangaroos Yopno and Kuna, shown with their mother. The shower will help raise funds to care for zoo babies such as these.

Family Outings: Zoo baby boom

The Lincoln Children’s Zoo is holding a baby shower Saturday in celebration of the new additions born this season at the zoo.

Among the births being celebrated are Ezra, a Shetland pony, and Yopno and Kuna, twin Matschie’s tree kangaroos that are the first documented case of twins in the species.

The shower, being held between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., will also celebrate the arrival of a red panda cub, born on July 19. The cub has required hand feeding every three hours.

The shower will serve as a fundraiser. The zoo anticipates the cost to raise the new babies will reach $35,000.

A monetary donation (minimum of $1 per person) is required to enter the shower, held in the Camelot Commons Education Center, located in ZooVille Square. Inside, attendees will enjoy crafts, hands-on learning experiences, a slideshow of the joeys’ growth and more.

The zoo is also offering a special red panda adoption for $50 that allows four people to watch the small cub being fed.

The Lincoln Children’s Zoo is located at 1222 S. 27th St. in Lincoln.

BELLEVUE

Journey to the Lost World without leaving the metro

The Fontenelle Forest Nature Center on Sunday opens DinoQuest, a traveling dinosaur exhibit featuring replicas of more than 40 different prehistoric beasts.

The exhibit along the stroller-friendly Riverview Boardwalk boasts life-size dinosaur replicas made using the most accurate information known by scientists — including a velociraptor, a mother parasaurolophus protecting her nest and more.

Inside, amateur paleontologists can get into hands-on activities that include digging up fossils at the Dino Dig, working in the Paleo Lab or comparing their own feet to giant dino-footsteps. Kids can learn about the Nebraska creatures that were alive during the age of dinosaurs.

During Sunday's grand opening, special activities include critter encounters, dino crafts and the chance to meet two characters from NET Television's PBS Kids shows: Sid from “Sid the Science Kid” will introduce his friend Buddy the T-Rex from the new series “Dinosaur Train.”

Fontenelle Forest Nature Center is at 1111 Bellevue Blvd. North in Bellevue. Admission is $7 per person during DinoQuest, which will be on display through Oct. 31. The nature center is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Thursdays until 8 p.m.) For more information, visit www.fontenelleforest.org or call 402-731-3140.
