Some of the best performances at Saturday’s USA Track and Field Region 8 Junior Olympics came in the preliminary rounds of the sprints.
So there should be some sizzling races today at Burke Stadium. Athletes in five age groups from Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and the Dakotas will get their last chance to qualify for the USATF National Junior Olympics in Greensboro, N.C.
A race that should be especially fast is the Youth Boys (ages 13-14) 100 meters. Darian Trout-Brown of Lincoln, who owns the national record in the Midget (11-12) division, had the fastest qualifying time of 11.77 seconds, just ahead of La Vista’s Kenzo Cotton at 11.93.
Luke Worden of Scottsbluff (12.23) and Marquette Dixon of Omaha (12.25), also are in the top five. The top three finishers in each event qualify for nationals.
Cotton set the pace in the 200, winning his heat in 24.20, ahead of the 24.51 Trout-Brown ran to win his heat. Cotton also is running in the 400, a timed final in which he’s the top seed.
K.J. Cotton, Kenzo’s younger brother, also led in the Bantam Boys (10-and-under) 100 and 200, just ahead of Omaha’s Shannon Brewer. Cotton ran a 13.71 in the 100 and a 28.29 in the 200 while Brewer — who holds the Nebraska Association record of 13.52 in the 100 — posted times of 13.90 and 28.48.
The girls Midget 200 is expected to be close. Ahmani Green, whose father is pro football running back Ahman Green, leads with a 27.01. She also has the fastest 100 time at 13.14.
Not far behind is Tiani Reeves of Gothenburg at 27.32. Reeves owns the association record in the long jump at 16 feet, one-half inch, and she won that event Saturday at 14-11½. Reeves and Green also are entered in the 400.
Kristie Mullen of Omaha Roncalli lowered her association record in winning the Intermediate Girls (15-16) 800 in 2:13.89. Jon Higgins of Council Bluffs Lewis Central won the Young Men’s (17-18) discus with a toss of 168-2, and Drew Staskiewicz of Millard North set an association record Friday by winning the hammer in the same age group with a throw of 196-3.
Brad Higgins of Norfolk narrowly missed an association record in the Young Men’s decathlon by scoring 6,038 points in the 10 events, 151 behind the 6,189 Steve Craig of Ralston scored in 1994.
