A 38-year-old Lincoln man was charged Thursday in Dodge County with felonies as a result of his alleged use of illegal homemade fireworks that injured an 80-year-old Fremont woman over the Fourth of July weekend.

David J. Parr is accused of three felonies — second-degree assault, possession of a destructive device and use of an explosive device to commit a felony. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of being in possession of illegal fireworks.

Parr, who was arrested Thursday afternoon and taken to the Dodge County Jail, is being held on $100,000 bail. He must pay 10 percent of that amount, $10,000, to be released.

Dodge County Attorney Paul Vaughan said the second-degree assault charge alleges that Parr recklessly caused serious bodily injury with a dangerous instrument.

Parr, who was a guest of a neighbor, faces one to 20 years in prison for second-degree assault and use of an explosive to commit a felony. He faces up to five years in prison for the third felony charge.

Dodge County Sheriff Steve Hespen said Ioma Sukstorf of Fremont was flown to the Nebraska Medical Center about 4 p.m. Sunday in critical condition after being hit in the jaw by a piece of metal that broke off “a makeshift cannon” being fired about 80 feet away.

Sukstorf and her 85-year-old husband, Loyd, were sitting on the porch of their Platte River home at 1799 S. Ridge Road, about one-half mile south of Fremont, at the time of the incident. The Sukstorfs also have a home in Fremont.

Jeff Sukstorf, a son of the injured woman, said his mother remained in critical condition Thursday afternoon.

“They've told us this is going to be a long process for recovery,” Sukstorf said. He declined to comment on the charges.
