On the popular TV series “Gossip Girl,” the character of Blair Waldorf, played by Leighton Meester, is ahead of the latest trends, including headbands.
What are they?
A hair accessory made of just about anything — silk, shell, lace or peacock feathers.
Who's wearing them?
They're everywhere, thanks to the popular “Gossip Girl” TV series, mostly on tweens to 20-somethings. Celebrities Jessica Alba, Nicole Richie and Natalie Portman wear the hair accessory.
“I really like the ones with flowers on the side,” said Omahan Kacie Gerard, 29. “It's almost retro but not. It's so chic and beats wearing the typical ponytail.”
Why are they popular?
They're great to wear when you're having a bad hair day and need a quick fix. You can wear one and pull your hair back in an elastic ribbon to run errands. And they're stylish enough to jazz up an outfit. Think instant glam.
“They're simple, cheerful accessories that you can wear with everything,” said A.J. Ward, manager of Beyourself Boutique, 307 N. 78th St.
How do you wear them?
There is no wrong way. Some women place the band about 2 inches from the start of their hairline to keep the band from sliding off. Some wear the headband across their forehead, similar to the way Olivia Newton-John did in her hit single “Physical.”
Where can you find them?
Just about anywhere. High-fashion houses DKNY and Alexander Wang in New York sell them. Their take is a bit posh and slightly old-fashioned. You also can find them at mall stores, such as Wet Seal, Forever 21 and Old Navy.
How much do they cost?
Typically between $3 and $50, depending on the style and brand.
