An 18-year-old Omaha man died during surgery Saturday night after being shot at the El Dorado Club in south Omaha.

Maxwell M. Griffy was found outside the club near 24th and P Streets by police investigating a disturbance about 11 p.m. He was taken to Creighton University Medical Center in critical condition. He died early Sunday.

Police on the scene were trying to figure out where exactly the shooting took place, but some of the teens streaming from the club afterward said they believed it occurred immediately outside.

As police arrived, they put out a call for help, because they needed a large number of officers to deal with the hundreds of teens inside the club said Sgt. Mark Matuza of the Omaha Police department.

Inside the club, an announcment went out over the public address system that a shooting had taken place outside and no one could leave, said Candice Partee, 16, of Omaha.

After the annoncment, music kept playing, but the air had been let out of the room.

"Nobody really wanted to party" Candice said, "everyone was like, ‘Oh, my God.' "

The shooting took place about 11:05 p.m.

Police blocked off 24th street between P and Q Streets as they investigated. Officers had four young men sitting on a curb at 24th and P in handcuffs. On Sunday, Officer Jacob Bettin, a police spokesman, said there are no suspects in custody and the investigation is continuing.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 444-STOP or the homicide unit at 444-5656.
