Play it smooth, go for the show
What should you listen to this week? Well, Maxwell drops some smooth R&B sounds in “BLACKsummers’night.” The Drive-By Truckers rock out with “Live From Austin TX.” And if you’re a show tunes kind of person, look for “Rock of Ages: Original Broadway Cast Recording.” All three albums come out Tuesday.
Another opening, so many shows
So Lil’ Abner, Patsy Cline and Mrs. Jennings’ sitter are on an island in the South Pacific … No, that’s not the beginning of a joke. It’s a tease for the coming week’s theater openings. Ralston Community Theatre opens the musical “Li’l Abner,” while Papillion-La Vista Community Theatre kicks off “South Pacific.” At the Omaha Community Playhouse, hit musical “Always … Patsy Cline” begins a return engagement, and a brand new play, “Mrs. Jennings’ Sitter,” opens at the Shelterbelt. Details in Thursday’s Go section.
After ‘Borat’ comes ‘Brüno’
Meet Borat’s comedic brother Brüno. Sacha Baron Cohen, who played the irreverent “Borat,” returns to the silver screen Friday with more politically incorrect comedy. In “Brüno,” he plays the flamboyant Austrian fashionista title character.
An alt-country experience
If you like a little alternative with your country, pick up Son Volt’s “American Central Dust” on Tuesday. The album is a back-to-basics affair, with songs arranged over the strums of an acoustic guitar. Fronted by former Uncle Tupelo member Jay Farrar, the alt-country group also performs Monday at Slowdown.
Concerts are a guy thing
Let’s hear it for the boys. The Qwest Center Omaha will be full of male musicians this week. First up are the Jonas Brothers. The Disney group plays Tuesday, and Keith Urban follows on Thursday. The country star performs with Jason Aldean.
Get set for some Jazz & Blues
Maybe you’re looking for some outdoor music. The Omaha Riverfront Jazz & Blues Festival is Friday and Saturday at Lewis & Clark Landing. Performers include Dave Stryker, Al Jarreau, Bobbi Humphrey and Norman Brown’s Summer Storm. And Joslyn Art Museum’s Jazz on the Green celebrates its 25th summer. Look for more in Thursday’s Go section.
Debt-ridden Vibe folds
Street-savvy Vibe Magazine folded last week after racking up huge debt. In the 1990s, it was the hot source for all things hip-hop, R&B and rap.
