Junior Olympics: Records fall on final day

Three more association records were bettered Sunday during the final day of the USA Track and Field Nebraska Association Junior Olympics at Burke Stadium, but only two can be added to the record book.

Millard South sophomore-to-be Morgan Woitzel won the Intermediate Girls 400-meter dash in 55.96 seconds to replace the 56.60 run by former Omaha Central star Maurtice Ivy in 1981. Woitzel, who runs for the Omaha Racers, edged Millard South teammate Clara Nichols, who finished second in 57.40.

It was Nichols, who competes for the Cornhusker Flyers, who defeated Woitzel for the all-class gold medal at last month’s state high school meet. Nichols won that race in 56.06 after Woitzel tied the Class A state meet record of 55.76 in the prelims.

The top six finishers in each event advanced to the July 9 to 12 Region 8 USATF Junior Olympics at Burke. The top three regional finishers move on to the National Junior Olympics July 28 to Aug. 2 in Greensboro, N.C.

The other association record came in the Bantam Boys 100. Shannon Brewer of Omaha’s Boys and Girls Club Jaguars finished in 13.52 to top the previous standard of 13.76 by Kenzo Cotton of La Vista in 2006.

Brewer and KJ Cotton, Kenzo’s younger brother, both finished with 13.52s, but Brewer’s electronic time was faster. The pair also finished 1-2 in the 200, with Brewer edging Cotton 27.81 to 28.0.

Kenzo Cotton won the Youth Boys 400 in 53.18. He also finished second to Darian Trout-Brown in the 100 and 200. Trout-Brown, who set the national Midget Boys 100-meter record last year, won the 100 in 11.54 and the 200 in 23.62, while Cotton’s marks were 11.89 and 24.03.

Maia Reynolds, a junior at Omaha Benson who runs for the Midwest Striders, topped the Intermediate Girls record in the 200 but the mark isn’t eligible for consideration because of the trailing wind. Her 25.0 was .08 faster than the record set by Stephanie Kurz in 1990.
