Junior Olympics: Moen-Davis breaks two records in meet

Some familiar names had big performances Saturday at the Nebraska Association USATF Junior Olympics.

LaQue Moen-Davis, who will be a junior at Omaha Central, was a part of two association records during the first day of the meet at Burke Stadium. Moen-Davis won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.36 seconds to top the association record of 14.57 in the Intermediate Girls (ages 15-16) set a year ago by Alexandria Gochenour of Missouri Valley, Iowa, who finished second in 14.44.

Last week Gochenour set the association record in the heptathlon by scoring 4,601 points to break the previous mark of 4,449 set by former Nebraska All-American Ashley Selig in 2000.

Moen-Davis also teamed with fellow Midwest Striders Breunna McCarty, Brianna McGhee and Maia Reynolds to shatter the 400 relay record in 47.37.

The previous record was 48.17 set in 1990 by a team representing the Omaha Housing Authority that included Mikaela Perry and Stephanie Kurz.

Moen-Davis finished one-half inch short of the triple jump record by winning with a leap of 38-2.

The top six finishers will advance to the Region 8 meet at Burke that runs from July 9 to 12, and the top three Region 8 finishers will go to the National Junior Olympics in Greensboro, N.C., from July 28 to Aug. 2.

Class A shot-put champion Chris Reed of Omaha Central won the Young Men's (17-18) event with a throw of 55-6 on his final attempt, ahead of South Dakota Class B state champion Cody Snyder of Lake Andes (53-0). In the discus, Snyder finished second to Caleb Henry of Loup City, Neb., who won with 163-10 to Snyder's 154-4. Henry also won the javelin at 168-11.

Kearney's Maggie Maher won the Young Women's pole vault at 11-6, and Tiani Reeves of Gothenburg won the Midget Girls (11-12) long jump with a leap of 15-9.

Darian Trout-Brown of Lincoln, who set the national age group record in the Midget Boys 100 dash a year ago, led qualifiers in the Youth Boys (13-14) event in 11.66.
